{restyle} combo dress

when i'm op shopping i tend to be drawn to parts of clothes - details, prints, fabrics - but rarely do i find something i like the whole of without feeling the need to tweak or snip! and so, often i'll combine parts of clothes to make one new item.
in this case, i liked the detailing on the red top, but as i am currently sporting the uber-sturdy maternity bra strap (see above, sigh) i knew i'd never wear it with such thin straps. i liked the fabric of the skirt also, but because i'm tall it finished at an awkward neither-maxi-nor-midi length. i liked the length when i pulled it up as a strapless though so knew it'd be better (for me) as a dress.
here's a basic look at how i combined the two:
i cut the elastic from the top of the skirt and then following the shape of the discarded piece (see above) i cut the same shape from the top of the skirt. i overlocked it after cutting to hold the lining and outer fabric together.
then i joined the skirt to the trimmed top and reapplied the crochet trim.
i made my thicker straps out of the leftover fabric (see cutting directions above) and i had fantastic plans to make them breastfeeding-friendly by having them unbutton. in theory it works, but i didn't allow enough stretch around the top for the bodice to pull down. /fail. so i think i will just snip the extra length and attach them straight to the bodice. live and learn! :)

have you ever done a combo restyle?
do you thrift clothes for their good bits? or do you only buy if you like the whole thing?
i'd love to hear

  1. THAT is freaken awesome! It looks amazing on you! I have definitely recently started looking at the clothing section differently when it comes to op shopping, especially when it comes to using adults clothes to make kids clothes - I guess looking at it more as fabric rather than clothes - I need to look more for me though - I was I could make something like this and when you've spent so little its not a major mistake if it fails, aye?

I got Noah's knees pic and the postcards in the mail, btw - thanks so much its all very adorable and generous :)

  2. Dee, I love this SO much. I don't think I would have EVER thought of doing something like this! Now I can look at op shop clothes with new eyes.

    Thank you!

  3. um... LOVE!! very, very clever! normally it's the fabric that draws me into a peice of clothing. And if it doesn't fit/is not quite right, I usually buy it anyway and add it to the stash! sadly it's been so, so long since I last went op-shopping but I feel the need to change this and soon...

  4. You are a legend!! I have bought many pieces over the years just for one aspect of it but am too scared to make the first snip.
I actually have a shirt here that one of our boys wore to my Nan's tangi that belonged to one of my Uncles, it's so awesome that I have been wanting to make it into a dress using a skirt that I thrifted specifically for that purpose...where to start is what's holding me up.
Thanks for inspiring me as always :)

  7. I love it! (and your lovely thin pins) I almost always buy to restyle, mostly adult to child restyle. But I'm starting to try and change things to my liking - not as amazing as yours though!

  12. I love love love this. You are so creative!

I always look for clothes with this in mind. I love going to thrift stores and thinking...change this, add this...but I do not seem to have the talent to pull it off! I'm learning though. It's such a fun process. I approach it like I do my cooking. Just keep doing it...one day you'll get really good at it. I hope I'm right!

  15. Fab! And I love all that breatfeeding friendliness- even if some parts were not as successful as hoped :-). I have a giant bin of op-shop clothes, or old, salvageable stuff, that is waiting, very patiently, to be repurposed, but I seem to be on a bit of a straight-up-fabric binge at the mo! Thanks for the inspiration to dig into that bin of doom/treasure! Xx*
