(home)school lunches: week 4

i'm certainly no glam whizz-bang chef. i do old school, fill-yer-belly kinda food. and so, i'm a little embarrassed to share these lunches, but am assuming there must be more like me out there?
mothers who buy chorizo sausages, freeze them and use them one, or two, at a time over a few months?
mothers who buy canned baked beans (Pams, no less)?
mothers who have the staples - cheese, onion, veg - but little else?
surely there is. (i hope)
anyway, it's because i'm no fancy cook that i have no names for my made-up lunches. maybe you could suggest a title??

i add chorizo to almost everything for a bit of flavour, but one child doesn't really like it so i had the genius idea of grating it (i freeze them and use as needed) - it worked! She had no idea it was hiding in there.
also, at this time of the year, we're eating garlic with as many meals as possible.
i fried the onion and garlic until clear, then added chorizo and zucchini, then beans.
i folded them into the pita wraps and sprinkled with cheese and tumeric powder for colour.
the kids loved these and they were pretty quick to whip up too.
i think i'm going to have to start making soups for lunch soon. it's getting to be that kind of weather...
previous lunches:

i hope you've all had a lovely week. we've had a bit of vomiting, rain and op shopping...

  1. There is! We are staple-buyers too, and Pams is one of my favourite brands! Also, I think you are pretty glam! Your last sentence made me giggle - sounds delightful!

  2. I have no idea what Pams is, but even though your lunches are simple, I always want to eat em!

  3. I am the master of having a stash of chorizo, or flash bacon, in the freezer & using a smidgen at a time :) Amazing how one little sausage can brighten your day! x

  4. There's nothing wrong with what you're doing (crickey we eat homemade sourdough bread and homemade cheese with a piece of fruit every day for lunch here! variety comes in which herbs are in the cheese, what optional extras are in the bread and what fruit is in season)
BUT if you'd like some inspiration, try this:

  6. Oh yum!! We eat very basic foods here too. With food allergies we keep things to the basics. Luckily some brands of baked beans are gluten free and they are my favourite quick food ... will definitely keep this idea in mind when we get some gf wraps.

  7. We buy Pams! And use chorizo one by one from the freezer! And I think we might need to give these ones a go for afternoon tea one day.

  8. Dee,
I love your blog. I haven't commented yet, but I find your fashion and the obvious joy you take in your family and home delightful and sincere. I'm 5 months pregnant with my first, so I appreciate any source of info on keeping a home and kids happy!
I wanted to share a soup-making tip with you: After sauteeing onion and garlic, add a can of baked beans to cook for a few minutes, then mash roughly before adding stock and other soup ingredients. Some kids won't eat beans (yours don't seem to have trouble with this), so mashing them kind of disguises them, as well as adds a smoky, complex, sweetish taste and a thicker texture (plus protein!). Great for vegetable/noodle soup. You can whip up a soup in under an hour that tastes like it's been on the stove for half a day. I hope you try & enjoy.
    Thanks for the lovely blogging.

  9. Yip I always freeze rashers of bacon a couple at a time... its a real luxury if we ever have a rasher each! Loving you lunches posts - great ideas and these sound like whiz bang pop lunches to me :)
