it's {party week}!!
i'm so excited about today's {dee.i.y}...it's one JUST FOR THE BOYS!!!
boys often miss out on the crafty stuff, so here's something especially for the little blokes in your life.
i hope you/they enjoy it~~

::fabric for pirate bandana::
::fabric for pirate face::
::fabric for pirate body::
::fabric for the back side of your pillowcase::
::black felt for eye patch::
::pillowcase (for measurements)::
::fabric pen or paint::
::scissors (and other sewing paraphernalia)::
{step 1}
:: using your pillowcase for measurements cut a back piece, remembering to include extra length for the foldy-uppy bit...(pillowcase sizes vary a LOT between countries so it's easiest to take one from your cupboard that fits fab and snag the measurements)
cut the following pieces for your pirate (remember to include seam allowances where necessary):
bandana - 1/3 of pillowcase length, trim corners to make it roundy.
body - 1/2 of body
face - the remaining gap!
cut an extra piece for bandana tie (no shorter than 30cm/12")
your pieces should look like the photo above.
{step 2}
:: to make the tie, fold in half with right sides together and sew together leaving a gap in the centre.
turn through. (i didn't worry about closing the hole because it will be hidden when it's sewn into the pillowcase)
{step 2 1/2}
sew all 3 front piratey pieces together. i overlocked them also.
{step 3}
:: using the black felt, applique the eye patch on. (i'm useless at applique, don't look too close at mine!)
{step 4}
:: to insert the tie, fold in half (where the turning-through hole was, remember?) and place at the bottom edge of your pirate's bandana. when you sew the pieces together you will zoom over this bit (a couple of times actually, to make sure it doesn't get tugged out!!)
pin the front and back pieces together all the way around. but FIRST!...
{step 5}
:: to make the fold-over-bit on the inside of your pillowcase, you need to hem both pieces (i used the selvedge on my inner as a hem)
then place your two sides together with the extra length of the back side just laying out longer...then grab it and fold it up over the top of your front. pin. and sew up all the way around your pillowcase.
{step 6}
:: paint or draw a happy pirate face on your pillowcase.
...and give to a little guy (or girl) to cuddle at night :)

Dee, you have NO IDEA how much your posting this helps me! I am nanny to a 4 and a half year old who is pirate obsessed, and has been asking for a new pillow for his bed (sounds odd, but his sister has three, and he has two - completely logical if you are four and a half!). Christmas present sorted!
ReplyDeleteNow that is too cool!! I wish my boys were a few years younger so I could do this!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute I can hardly stand it! Thank you for sharing this whimsical design! Who says it's only for kids? ;-)
