i'm not a fanatical collector of anything but i there are a couple of things i keep a thrifting eye out for:
always, always, these Dean's Gift Books or any illustrated by Janet and Anne Grahame-Johnstone. my collection is slowly growing!
having only books and the outdoors for entertainment as a child, i very clearly remember staring for long hours at these illustrations. i haven't encountered any other illustrator that stimulates such brilliant imagination as these twin sisters do.
i especially remember being captivated by this illustration...?
what do you always look for when thrifting/op-shopping?

I had books with the same illustrations too! I had completely forgotten about them. One was puss in boots and the other must have been a nursery rhyme book. I remember they were hard cardboard pages and bound with material on the spine!...sorry just having a wee "moment" ;)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it amazing how much we remember from those pics (I grew up with no t.v either till I was about 7)
I love those illustrations too. I have a book of fairy tales from my childhood that has followed me around the world (I grew up in 7 countries) and has finally arrived in my oldest daughter's bookcase. She loves it and I love that she takes care of it in the same way I did. She's so gentle with the pages (makes up for the fact that she ripped my childhood copy of Now we are six to pieces as a baby!!) Thanks for sharing the pictures. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI have a few of their illustrated books, my favourite is "the far away tree" It was given to when I was a girl and has the most magical illustrations. I too look out for these books while op shopping!
ReplyDeleteHi have some of these, I'll dig them out and any thing you don't have I would love to give them to you! xx
ReplyDeleteOooh delish! I have a couple of these too, aren't they incredible?!! I always ALWAYS look for classic childrens books when I'm out. I have quite a good collection of Wonder Books, I'll share them soon! And I'm always on the hunt for Astrid Lindgren and Laura Ingalls Wilder... Oh, childhood!
